Is Phu Quoc Safe for First-Time Scooter Riders?
Editorial team · Checked 5 November 2026

In short
Phu Quoc can suit an experienced, licensed rider in dry daylight, but beginners should practise away from traffic. Avoid heavy rain, darkness and rough rural roads. Automatic scooters guide range: USD 5 to 10.
Phu Quoc can be suitable for an experienced scooter rider who has the right licence, insurance and a helmet, but it is not a good place to learn in busy traffic. Practise before departure, choose paved roads in daylight, and avoid heavy rain, darkness and unfamiliar rural routes. If you lack experience or are carrying a child, a car is the safer choice.
Is Phu Quoc safe for a first scooter ride?
It is safest to treat your first island ride as a controlled practice trip, not as a long sightseeing journey.
Traffic on Phu Quoc can be unpredictable. Motorbikes, cars, animals, sand, potholes and sudden weather all create hazards. Even a quiet-looking road may change quickly near towns, beaches or junctions. Wet roads reduce grip, and poor lighting makes it harder to see road edges and obstacles.
Do not learn to ride in busy traffic on the island. If you have never ridden a scooter, or you are not comfortable with throttle control, braking and turning, arrange another form of transport instead.
Operators and local sources report that legal riding requires an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle category plus your home licence. Confirm the current rule on WhatsApp before booking. Only rent if you are experienced, licensed where required and covered by insurance. Operators and local sources also report that helmets are mandatory for both the rider and passenger. Confirm the current rule and make sure both people have a suitable helmet.
The guide range for an automatic scooter is USD 5 to 10 per vehicle, checked on 5 November 2026. The exact price and rental conditions vary by operator. We arrange bookings with local partners and confirm the exact price in the chat before you pay.
What are the roads like on Phu Quoc?
The main paved roads are generally the easiest places to begin, especially around Duong Dong and along the better-used southern routes.
Long Beach and Tran Hung Dao in Duong Dong, the road to the airport and the coast heading south are in good shape. These roads still require attention, particularly when traffic, sand or rain is present.
From Duong Dong, Ong Lang is about 7 to 8 km and usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. It is a more suitable first outing than a remote beach road, provided the weather is dry and you already feel comfortable controlling the scooter.
Open roads can encourage riders to go faster than they should. Operators and local sources report speed limits of 40 km/h in urban areas and 50 to 60 km/h on open roads. Treat these as limits, not targets. Slow down near turns, villages, parked vehicles, animals and wet surfaces.
Road conditions can change beyond the main paved routes. Roads toward Ganh Dau and Bai Thom include uneven, unpaved stretches that may have deep ruts. After rain, some parts can become close to impassable on a standard scooter.
Which routes suit beginners?
Begin with a short paved route near your accommodation, then consider Ong Lang or the main southern road only when you are comfortable with traffic and braking.
These routes are easier to manage because they use better roads and keep you closer to regular traffic and services:
| Route or area | What a new rider should know |
|---|---|
| Long Beach and Tran Hung Dao | Main paved roads around Duong Dong, but traffic and turns need attention |
| Airport road | Paved and straightforward in good weather, with normal road traffic |
| Coast heading south | Main road conditions are generally good, but the route becomes longer |
| Ong Lang | About 7 to 8 km and 10 to 15 minutes from Duong Dong |
| Ganh Dau and VinWonders | About 25 km and 35 to 45 minutes from Duong Dong, with more distance to manage |
| An Thoi and Sunset Town | About 25 to 30 km and 40 to 55 minutes, better for a confident rider |
| Bai Sao | About 25 to 28 km and 40 to 50 minutes, with changing conditions near the beach |
| Rach Vem | The final 5 km is red dirt, rough but passable on a standard scooter in the dry season |
Rach Vem deserves special caution. The road from Suoi Cai includes a 5 km red dirt section. It can be slippery from May to October, so go slowly and allow extra time. In wet conditions, postpone the trip if you are new to scooters.

What should I practise before leaving?
Practise braking, turning and starting smoothly before joining normal island traffic.
A safe practice session should include:
- Starting and stopping without sudden throttle movements
- Using both brakes smoothly
- Turning at low speed
- Checking over your shoulder before changing position
- Moving away from the edge of the road without swerving
- Handling a passenger only after you are confident alone
- Riding over small changes in road surface at low speed
Use a quiet, open area away from busy traffic. Do not use the first rental ride to discover how the controls work. Check the brakes, tyres, lights, horn and mirrors before leaving, and ask the local partner to explain any unfamiliar controls.
Keep both hands ready, leave space around other vehicles and reduce speed before bends. A passenger changes the balance of the scooter, so do not carry a child simply because a scooter seems cheaper than a car.
Is it safe to ride at night or in the rain?
No, beginners should avoid night riding and heavy rain, especially on roads they do not know.
After 18:00 outside Duong Dong, it is dark and there are no streetlights. Poor lighting combines with animals, potholes, sand and traffic. A road that felt simple during the day may be difficult to read after dark.
Tourist motorbikes are not permitted on the main streets of Sunset Town between 7pm and 10pm, according to operators and local sources. Confirm the current rule on WhatsApp or locally before travelling there.
Rain creates a different set of problems. During the rainy season, roughly May to October, paved roads can flood in lower-lying areas. Dirt roads turn into mud tracks quickly, and routes to beaches can become slippery or deeply rutted. Sudden tropical downpours can also reduce visibility with little warning.
Avoid riding during heavy rain. If rain begins during a trip, slow down, avoid standing water and find a safe place to wait rather than continuing toward a remote beach. Read our guide to riding a scooter safely during Phu Quoc rain before planning a wet-season route.
When should I not ride a scooter?
Do not ride if you are inexperienced, unlicensed where required, uninsured or unsure how to control the scooter.
Choose a car or another transport option when:
- Heavy rain has started or is forecast for your route
- It is after dark and the road is unfamiliar
- You need to travel on rough rural or beach access roads
- You are carrying a child and do not have strong scooter experience
- You feel tired, unwell, nervous or affected by alcohol
- The scooter has a brake, tyre, light or mirror problem
- You cannot confirm the current licence and insurance requirements
Do not let a low rental cost decide the transport method. The safer choice is the one that matches your experience, the weather, the road and the passengers.
Before booking, read about common scooter rental scams in Phu Quoc and ask what insurance, damage checks, fuel rules and documents apply.
What should I do before booking?
Message us on WhatsApp with your riding experience, licence details, travel dates and intended route. We arrange bookings with local partners and confirm the exact price and conditions in the chat before you pay.
For a first island ride, request a suitable automatic scooter, check the brakes and tyres at collection, wear a helmet and plan a short daylight route on paved roads. If rain, darkness or road conditions make the plan unsuitable, change the route or choose a car.
